‘Careering About’

This program offers groups of between ten and twelve Year 10 students two days of experiential learning in a designated industry.
Students will visit several venues, hear about their business operations, tour the premises and talk with young people employed in the organisations about their experiences and perspectives on working in the target industry.
Where possible, a host employer will provide an opportunity for students to do a ‘hands on’ task.

Dates for all day ‘Tour and Try Out’ programs:
3 March, 11 April, 8 May, 22 May, 5 June,12 June,14 August, 21 August,11 September, 25 September, 30 October, 13 November

This is an all day event. Although start times may vary slightly, plan on 8:30 am. ‘Careering About’ Tours are scheduled to return students to their schools in time to connect with after school bus services.

‘Coaching Young People for Success’ Training

Life Business Consultancy has developed a ‘Turn Key’ Life, Career and Performance Coaching system that schools and youth agencies can deliver themselves straight away!  Coaching Young People for Success is designed for teachers, counselors, career transition workers and youth professionals and is currently being delivered across Australia.

Coaching Young People for Success includes THREE COACHING MODULES that can be delivered separately or together to assist young people design an inspiring Life, Career and School Performance Pathway Plan from the inside-out!  The program includes a one or two day Leaders Training Program, a complete Leaders Coaching Kit and Pathway Plan Answer Worksheets that will guide all future coaching sessions.

In 2009, South West VETlink will be funding training opportunities for up to 15 career practitioners from the South West region to attend this fantastic resource over March and April.

‘What’s it Really Like’ (WIRL) Indigenous DVD Launch

The WIRL Project is a collaborative activity that came together in two streams.  The first stream being initiated by the Focus Group for Training and Employment for Young People with Disability to feature young people with disability, with Active Business Services funding part of this project.  The second stream was funded through Rural Skills Australia to feature young people in rural industries.

In 2007, working with key industry people, South West VETlink coordinated the project which filmed ten career segments of young people from the South West of Western Australia and placed them on the national web based career resource WIRL (What It’s Really Like) http://www.wirl.com.au.  South West VETlink also supported the filming of two career segments young with disabilities.

In 2008, South West VETlink further supported the WIRL project by coordinating the filming of 10 segments for WIRL with young indigenous Western Australians, with the aim of producing a DVD showcasing young indigenous Western Australians in different job roles. 

In 2009, South West VETlink will market and launch the now complete DVD at a celebration attended by students’ filmed and work-shadow students.

Bunbury Employment Expo 2007

The Bunbury Expo was a Centrelink initiative and showcased a range of government services available to individuals, families and the community.  In addition the Expo offered information, demonstrations, giveaways and opportunities to seek employment.

Career Breakfasts 2007/2008

Career breakfasts acknowledge that parents are valuable career partners. The project encourages P&F, P&C and/or existing school bodies identify industry representatives from within their own community to share workplace knowledge and experience with students. Where a working parent body has not been initiated within the school, the project will work toward establishing this body therefore seeking to develop new relationships within an existing community resource.

Careers Expo

In past years MacKillop Catholic College has hosted an extremely successful CAREERS EXPO.  Planning is now underway for 2008 and we hope you will place the 28th May in your diary.

We feel that the success of this Expo is in that it is held in the evening where students and parents are encouraged to come along together to discuss career prospects.

Placing the Expo at this time of the year supports families in making well informed subject selections for further study towards a chosen career.

Local industry is always well represented along with training and educational institutions. Presenters will be provided with space for a static display and the opportunity to make presentations throughout the evening.

Equine Industry Promotion 2007

In May 2007 the LCP partnered with Bunbury Turf Club and WA Racing and Gaming to promote for the equine industry at Careers Expo event held at the Bunbury Turf Club.
This programme was designed to:

  • Engage young people’s interest in the equine industry as a career pathway.
  • To develop an understanding by VET Co-ordinators and Career Advisors of the equine industry as a career pathway.

This event was a huge success with students travelling up to three hours to attend the Expo. Exhibitors included Farriers, Jockeys, Breeders, Trainers and Veterinarians.

Future Possibilities Forum - 2008

The Bunbury Future Possibilities Forum Committee is pleased to advise that the Forum will be held again in 2008. Planning is currently underway and further information will be available shortly.

The Forum is for students with learning difficulties, physical, sensory, intellectual and/or psychiatric disabilities, their teachers, families and support networks. The aim of the Forum is to:

  • Inform students, teachers and families about employment and further education post school options available to students
  • Promote the excellence and use of Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETIS) by high schools to potential Employment and Training Agencies and Higher Education Organisations
  • Create partnerships between students, families, schools and post school destinations
  • The format of the Forum promotes displays and presentations by specialist employment agencies, community organisations, and educational institutions including schools, TAFEs and universities.

This message is to alert you that it is on, so you can start the planning process if you either wish to promote your organisation or alert students and families who may wish to attend that it is on again.

Future Possibilities Forum 2007

A collaborative project to conduct a training and career focused event for students with learning difficulties which may include physical, sensory, intellectual and/or psychiatric disabilities.  The Forum attendees included youth with disabilities, their teachers, families and support networks.

This project involves the collection of various working Pathway Plans. The purpose of this collection is to collate a variety of documents that includes feedback from practitioners on their usability.

National Career Development Week School Banner Competition

This competition aims to promote the 2008 National Career Development week. Through actively participating schools and their students should be drawn into conversations regarding employability skills including teamwork and communication. Additionally opportunities may be created to discuss personal journeys, possibilities and challenges. Educators are encouraged to tie supporting resources and class work on careers development during this engaging project.

Interested schools were allocated a weatherproof banner 3 metres x 1 metre and a $50 resource voucher. The task was to produce a banner promoting National Careers Development week and to display their work outside their schools the week of and the week prior to NCDW. Jacksons Art supplies provided the prizes and judged the entries.

Promoting a Career Development Culture in Schools 2007

The workshops specifically identify teaching and learning strategies and resources to be used in the classroom and implementation strategies for schools using the Australian Blueprint for Career Development.  Workshops may be of benefit to Managers Participation, school administrators, Student Services staff in schools, VET Co-ordinators and learning area teachers who identify a role for themselves in delivering career development in their schools. The Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme is funded for and targeted at teachers.

Promoting a Career Development Culture in Schools 2008

In 2007 these workshops specifically identify teaching and learning strategies and resources to be used in the classroom. In addition it addresses implementation strategies for schools using the Australian Blueprint for Career Development.

In 2008 participants are encouraged to return for a full day entitled, update, refresh, share and review this will be an opportunity to share both resources and the practical experiences around creating a career culture in schools.

Promotion of Service Provision to schools 2007/2008

A promotional activity to provide information about South West VETlink, our activities and services to all schools in the four LCP regions.

Real Work, Real Learning

A collaborative project with Warren Blackwood EVE Co-ordinator, who will co-ordinate the production of a professionally filmed DVD to promote Workplace learning, SWL, SBS and industry engagement to students, parents and industry with a regional focus.  LCP will fund the production, copy and distribution of DVD & promo CD.  CD promo will go on South West VETlink website.

RICA – Career Photographic Competition

My Region My Career
The WA RICA Network has developed an innovative State-wide double competition in which all Year 10’s Throughout the State of WA can participate.  Through this activity the WA Career Advice Australia (CAA) Network have an excellent opportunity to promote CAA and provide a unique experience for Year 10 students State-Wide.

Participating students will be given the chance to be able to photograph various occupations that they find interesting, giving them an opportunity to visualise different occupations and assist them begin their exploration into tasks and the skills needed to enter into the workforce in the future.

RICA Competition Dates:
Monday, March 03, 2008 Schools to notify South West VETlink of their intention to participate in the competition.
Monday, May 05, 2008 Photos and consent forms to be submitted to South West VETlink.
Monday, June 02, 2008  State finalists to be displayed at Department of Education and Training Expo for public vote. State and Industry Winners to be announced.

School and Industry Leaders Forum - All Regions

This Forum is an opportunity for leaders in industry and education to build links through activities that will increase knowledge and opportunity for career exploration and further education.
The key aims of the Forums are to:

  • Improve career education in schools by engaging school and local business/industry in the development and delivery of career education and experiential learning in their schools;
  • Give principals and career teachers and local business and industry representatives the opportunity to discuss local job prospects, local skill needs and shortages, career opportunities and local career pathways and explore practical ways local businesses can participate in the career development of local young people;
  • Encourage career advisers to take advantage of professional development opportunities through further study or industry placements, including with financial support offered under the scholarship programme; and
  • Develop and implement local action plans to support and encourage ongoing interaction between key groups including principals, career teachers, business, industry and LCPs.

South West Automotive Programme

The South West Automotive Scholarship Programme is a one-year, school-industry alliance.  With funding from the LCP and Automotive Training Australia (WA) Inc, the programme allows selected students who have an automotive focus, to continue school studies, attend industry level training at TAFE as well as experience the rich diversity of future career and employment opportunities that exist within the automotive industry.

South West Equine Careers Expo

What is it really like working in the Equine Industry?  Get it straight from the horse’s mouth at….. THE SOUTH WEST EQUINE CAREERS EXPO
Meet young people working in the equine industry and industry specialists who can help you choose a training course and provide you with a work placement. Then in the afternoon take in the atmosphere of the Equine Industry as a guest of the Bunbury Turf Club at a Midweek Race Day. Refreshments and lunch provided.

South West VET Awards - 29th October 2008

In partnership with Bunbury VET Cluster, Warren Blackwood VET Cluster and SWISlink Cluster, South West VETlink Inc is proud to fund the inaugural South West VET Awards 2008 for Year 11 and 12 students.

The purpose of these awards is to acknowledge the relationships built between schools, their students and the host employer. Focussing on VET qualifications and Employability Skills, the Awards will clearly recognise the value of “On the Job Training” and the role of the employer as a mentor in the development of the student within the workplace.

Students will be nominated by their school on the recommendation of the host employer in a range of industry categories. The nominations will be assessed by an independent panel with the emphasis on host employer feedback. The interview checklist will be based around the Employability Skills.

Student Forum - Step to the Future 2008

This event is now full – congratulations and thank you to the the participating schools and 800 students.
Step to the Future is a leadership forum aimed at 15 - 18 year old students.
Leadership forums are seen as an opportunity to take the student from their school environments and through inspirational and or motivational speakers inspire students to strike personal and educational balances.

Teachers as Career Partners 2007/2008

Provides Career Development understanding to all staff in schools, through workshops delivered on school sites, to 12 LCP schools in Blackwood and Vasse regions and to 14 schools in Bunbury and Preston regions.  This funded is jointly funded the LCP, Department Education & Training; and Jobs South West Inc.
